Nakashima-no-Ufushi Big Stone is a Ryukyu limestone located on the premises of the Naha Bus Terminal in Izumizaki, Naha city. The stone is about 6m high, about 25m around the central part, and about 18m around the lower part. The lower part of the rock has a “notch” eroded part, which was washed away by the waves. The stone is important, since it shows where the seashore once was. Commonly known as “Nakashima-nu-ufushi” and the neighboring ones called “Nakashima-menu-hama” and “Ufushimume,” this big stone has been treasured as an auspicious stone for the village. In the past, there was the Nakashima licensed red-light district, giving an entertaining atmosphere to this area until the district was moved and merged with Tsuji-machi in 1908.
