Both the bridge and its access road were constructed of Ryukyu limestone. This three-level bridge has its central part slightly elevated. In total, the bridge is 13.18m long and 5.2m wide. The parapet made of cut Ryukyu lime stone is simple, but each stone has an unseen, skillfully done mortise and tenon joint. The arch of the bridge has adopted a circular arc shape. The pier of the bridge is constructed by a technique called “Nunozumi,” where rows of stones are horizontally laid on top of one another, and the other portions are constructed by “Aikatazumi,” where piles of stones are cut into polygonal shapes prior to fitting, including the stone-paved river bed, which is characterized by attention paid to permanent management.
The Hiji River Bridge was named after a well called “Hijiga”, located about 150m northeast from the bridge.
The gentle curving stone-paved access road was built to the bridge with adjustment of gradient. The road is 2.6m wide and the east side of the bridge is 28m in length, and the west side is 18.5m in length.
