This is the site of the Shimajiri government office which had jurisdiction over southern Okinawa island and the nearby outlying islands established in 1896.
The Shimajiri Yakusho (government office) was established in 1879 to administer the southern area of Okinawa Island the year after Okinawa prefecture was established. The directors and secretarial staff of the 15 Shimajiri Magiri's were moved into the Kochinda Magiri Bansho which became the Shimajiri Yakusho. In 1896, after it was attached to the Naha District Higashi-cho Naha Ward office, according to the two district five county system which took effect in 1896, (Naha and Shuri District, Shimajiri and Nakagami, Kunigami, Miyako and Yaeyama-gun), its name was changed to the Shimajiri-gun Yakusho (District Office), to serve an expanded jurisdiction including Kume, Iheya and neighboring islands.
In 1912, the District Office relocated from Higashi-machi to Wakasa-cho in Naha Ward (today’s Naha city). With the abolition of the district system in June 1926, the Shimajiri District Office was closed and the building demolished.
In 1934, the Kaiyo kaikan built on this same site in support of overseas emigration, offered emigration advice and interim lodging. That building burned down in a U.S. military air raid on October 10, 1944.
