- "Mitunda" means husband and wife. This is a pair of male and female shishi (Lion dogs).
Is is said that this shishi are protecting the Aji (Lord) of Uema from evil spirits and would send them back to Itokazu Gusuku Castle and Tama Gusuku Castle where they came from. That is because the Aji (Lord) of Uema attacked and destroyed the Itokazu Gusuku Castle during the Sanzan conflict period of Ryukyu.
It is believed that the grudges held from the battle had become evil spirits. The Mitunda is the guardian deity (Fuchigeshi) to push back the evil spirits. The name of the creator and the installation date are unknown. It was originally located about 24 meters to the north. - Quote
