- This stone-made arch bridge was part of the road connecting Shuri and Urasoe. It was known as Taira-bashi (Taira bridge).
In 1597, King Sho Nei undertook maintenance work on the road leading from Shuri to Urasoe Castle and had the wood plank bridge known as Taihei replaced by a stone-made arch bridge.
On the occasion of the Satsuma invasion (1609), severe fighting took place not far from this bridge, and during the Battle of Okinawa (1945) the Japanese Army destroyed it in an attempt to prevent the advance of the US forces.
After the war, a concrete-made bridge spanned the upper stream side, the bridge links traffic between Shuri and Urasoe, even today. - Quote
