King Sho Taikyu, the first Sho Dynasty during Keitai era (1450 - 1456), is considered the founder of this temple. It fell into ruins at the time of the Satsuma Invasion (1609), but 10 years later Prince Sho Kyu of Kin, led an initiative to begin its restoration and at one time it became the Bodai-ji (family temple) of the Kin family. The temple, however, was rebuilt at this location and not on what is believed to have been its original site in Sakiyama, Shuri.
